The first wedding of the summer was for my cousin Kirke who married a girl he met in med school, Sarah (how can he go wrong with a name like that?!). The wedding was in Winona Minnesota, a thriving metropolis on the border of Wisconsin. It was thrilling being in a booming border town for the weekend. Oh, I'm kidding. I really did enjoy the town. Luckily there were enough young people to make the wedding fun. Friday night we had dinner at a beautiful golf club up a hill.
Cousin Matthew (so cute!), Cousin Ginny and DadAfter the big dinner the kids walked over to a local bar, Brothers.
It was quite the happening local hang out for the college kids of Winona. The pitchers of beer, good beer, were $6. Yes! $6!! I bought 2 and tipped $8. Totally won the bartenders over. We had shots, and beer, and shots, and beer. I talked the bartenders into playing our favorite songs of the weekend: Umbrella, Girlfriend, Glamorous, Sweet Escape. Yes, it was fabulous. I'll have to find photos of the bar later. Dad's photos don't include the bars.
Toasting the bride and groom

The wedding was in a tiny little chapel in a corn field. Yes, in the middle of a corn field.
The bride handmade her dress with her Mother, which was gorgeous! Ginny, the groom's sister, sang a beautiful song on her Harp (she's a jazz harpist). She was so sweet. She cried the whole way through the song. The ceremony was short and sweet and talked about the couple's love of ice cream. It was the perfect wedding for Kirke and Sarah.
We were told the reception after the wedding was "games in a park so where fancy shorts and t-shirts". Well Dad took this to heart (oh Dad you trouble maker). He showed up in this beauty and lent one to cousin Barry (Groom's father). Shut I need to find that photo too.
Anyways we literally played games in the park, ate popcorn and chatted with everyone. We then walked down the street (approximately 3 houses down) and ate in Sarah's parent's backyard. The recipes were all her Mom's, the wine was made by her Father (in his basement--he sent away for a kit). It was exactly what Sarah and Kirke wanted and it fit. It just fit them.
We of course went back to our favorite bar that night... Brothers! We tried to sneak Matthew in who was 2 months shy of 21 but he was turned away. He was pretty upset but tried damn hard not to show it. While we were there drinking ($6 pitchers!) and dancing (Umbrella, Glamorous, Girlfriend, Sweet Escape) a big old bar fight broke out! Stupid boys and their penii. Some boys started fighting and their friends started fighting and before we knew it everyone was fighting. My sweet cousins from Northern MN and WI were so excited they went running towards the fight. Sigh. I grabbed them knowing that all our mothers would kill me if anything happened.
