Burglary, Police Report, Finger Printing, Insurance Fun!

Sunday AM I was planning on hitting spin class (the 1 hour and 15 minute one) to punish myself for my bad behavior last week. Instead my bed decided to hold me captive way longer than it normally does. It was one of those "I just want to lie in bed for a while" type mornings. When I finally got up I made myself a yummy breakfast and sat down to eat it. Just as I sat down to eat it there was a knock on my door (there are never knocks on my door) so I got up and found my parking neighbor at my door. She informed me she went to take her trash out and found that my window had been smashed. First thought in my head was, oh great I'm getting a new car soon and I have to pay to fix this stupid window?! So I put on pants (I was in shorts) and went downstairs. Sure enough I found that my passenger window had been smashed in.

They had taken my ipod, which is from 2004!!!!!!!!!, the connector to the stereo, ipod charger, a box of contact solution, my blue tooth headset plus charger, my old Gucci sunglasses, a case for my Ralph Lauren sunglasses, about 20 CDs, and the folder in the glove box containing all my financial docs for the car (but only expired proof of insurance and registration they left the current copies). The car behind me (who enters through a back garage door) was also hit. My other parking neighbor, Will - we're good friends now after our traumatic experience, said he had called the police department and been informed we would need to drive the car to the station to get it finger printed. I had plans that day so the car was forgotten for a few hours to see a very disappointing movie (The Other Boleyn girl is an excellent book but please don't bother with the movie).

When I returned home that night I really didn't want to go to the police station but was unsure if I should report this (did I have a civic duty as a responsible citizen to report the crime?). I called the Santa Monica Police Department to find out. They informed me that because the car was broken into within the building it was considered a burglary and they would need to send officers to do a full report. Oh boy. I was added to the list of SM citizens with police reports to file and told it might be a while, an hour at most. I guess SM does not have the worst crime rate in LA. Shocking to most of you I know. So Officer Erica came by and was very friendly and took all the info (weird thing - she had an iPhone. SMPD gets their officers iPhones?). Officer Erica said I'd need to drive over to the SMPD Monday AM to have the car finger printed. Woopee!

I'd like to point out that my mantra water "I am Loved" was just crapped all over in this process. It's now covered in graphite powder and glass. Is it now time to get a new mantra water??

Monday AM I called in to inform work I'd be late as I was at the SMPD. I drove right over with the morning air filling my car with it's wonderfulness (yeah like Mondays aren't bad enough I'm sitting in the cold in a car covered in glass going to get graphite powder poured over the interior of my already disgusting car). Officer Lady (didn't catch her name) was very nice and fingerprinted the entire car and then finger printed me. I am now officially in the system. Any hope of being a career criminal is now over.

Officer Lady did tell me that they would run all prints through the system and tell me if any came up. That means that any of my friends (or other characters I've been driving around) have a criminal record I will now know about it. Devon, Liz, Katherine, Jess, you've all sat in the front recently. Anything you have to tell me?

  5. hey sarah! (why didn't i realize you were the sarah blog on devon and courtney's blogs until now?) anyway...this EXACT SAME THING happened to me last week. the cops woke us up at 4am to let us know my passenger window had been smashed in and my gps was stolen. driving around in the pouring rain with no window was super fun as was the 2 hours it took to vacuum out all the broken glass. oh! and then the $300 i had to shell out for the new window. freakin burglars! i feel your pain from the other side of the country!
but i get to go to court and claim to be a victim which should be fun. i plan to take the stand (yes, courtney, i realize i will most likely not be taking any stand ;) and yell things like "that's him! that's the man who stole my garmin! take him away!"

  6. I'd been wondering if you were the Jo I knew. I couldn't tell. I can't believe you had to go to court! It looks like I won't have to go.

You had to vacuum out the glass yourself? The insurance paid for my window and the window guy vacuumed out the entire car.
