Stupid Pets

I have strong feelings on what should be a pet and what should not be a pet. One of the animals I feel is a bad pet is a bird. Caging an animal with wings for its entire life is just cruel.

One of my new neighbors has a bird. They place this bird outside all day on the weekends. How cruel is that? Look at the big bad world out here that you have NO chance of ever seeing.

On top of the cruelty aspect there is the noise part. The bird is loud and annoying. I want to go make it for dinner.

  3. umm... can we talk about the hypocrisy of this post for one minute?? you think it's cruel to keep a bird in a cage and yet at the end of the post, you say you want to cook said bird... hmmmm :)

i dont like birds as pets either... that said, my brother begged for a bird when he was a kid (and got it), named it joey, and he hung in our upstairs hallway for years and years. the cats loooooooved it. my brother didn't want to clean the cage and it finally died of cancer. poor joey.

in other stories, my parents' lake house neighbor has a big parrot named cowboy. he talks, flies about the house, and definitely does not live in a cage. he even knows how to play dead. he's kinda a cool kind of bird to have, if you are going to have a bird, which i have no desire to have....

  4. I think birds as pets are terrible. Cutting it wings to prevent it from doing the one thing that makes it a bird...fly.

And I am not sure that eating birds (we are carnivores after all) and believing that caging a bird for years is cruel, really constitutes hypocrisy.

  5. awww, see with my hypocrisy comment, maybe it wasn't the best choice of words, but what i was picturing was sarah snatching said bird from the cage and dropping it in a pot... which i think is rather cruel. and nobody eats parrakeets or the type of birds that are pets anyways... i'm going with that's not a chicken in the cage would be an appropriate bird to eat.

and i have to disagree, i don't think they clip all the birds wings... maybe they do... what do i know... all i know is the bird cowboy that is my parents' neighbors bird can fly. it flies all over their house so it's wings aren't clipped... which is a whole nother issue for me... ewwwww.... bird droppings!!! in random places!! not a fan.

  6. and further if you are going to have a bird as a pet... or any kind of pet... why the heck would you put it outside and let it just hang out there?!?!?! wouldn't you rather have it somewhere to spend time with it?!

and to further add to the discussion - is it cruel to keep cats indoors when they would naturally roam about outside?! i'm a HUGE proponent of keeping kitty inside... all the time... otis goes outside only on my deck and only under my supervision otherwise, forget it! too many scary things could happen to my little buddy and it's a proven fact that indoor cats have longer healthier lives. otis is beyond happy to sleep on the pillow next to me at night. :) anyways... just some random thoughts....

  7. the thought of me cooking anything should make everyone laugh. seriously we all know how good i am in the kitchen.

katherine - liz and i saw a man with a bird on his shoulder at a coffee shop. his shirt had bird crap all over it!!!!!!!!! like fresh crap and he just walked around. walked around with SHIT ON HIM!!!!!!!!!! didn't help the bird thing.

as for where cats belong. let's all agree they don't belong with me. i've got mad love for all your kitties but we need to keep them out of my house.

another confession - i feel the same way about fish that i do birds. stupid to have as pets.

  8. hahahaha yes, you cooking makes me laugh as much as me cooking makes me crack up. which is why it was funny to me the picture i got of you cooking up that poor neighbor's bird!!

ewwww, crap on the shoulder?? gross. i never ever said i wanted a bird, liked the idea of a bird, or thought that people who owned some birds weren't weird :) clearly this guy is weird if he is ok walking ard with bird poo on his shoulder!! eewwwwwwww

no, cats don't belong with you, but they sure are good cuddlers!! you know you love otis. and i seem to recall that at one point you considered a kitty!!

as for fish... at least they are pretty to look at and don't make noise! i don't have a fish as i don't think i need to entice otis to jump on the counter for a better view. but my parents have this gorgeous built in fish tank they put in a few years ago - and i must admit the fish are really pretty. my mom loves loves loves her fish tank. she likes to watch it while eating at the table. yeah, they are pretty, but i don't think she considers them pets. i think she sees them more as moveable art... or maybe that's how i think of them!! :)
