Thanksgiving was to be a day of activity one way or another. Lisa and I had conspired to get the whole family moving on the big eating day. I sent out an e-mail to announce a football game with all family members at 11AM, Dinner at 3PM and a surprise event later in the day. There was also an option to participate in the Run to Feed the Hungry at 8 AM for anyone interested. John announced that he wanted to participate in Run to Feed the Hungry so we did. Blake and I picked John John up bright and early and drove towards Sac State (that's California State University at Sacramento for those who don't know). We had to park across the river due to the large crowds. Let me take a small step backwards. As I was leaving the house that morning in my work out clothes my Dad pointed out it was 37 at that point. That's right 37. I almost died just hearing the numbers! Okay back to the "race". Blake and I were planning on walking it and John was planning on running it. We agreed he'd just walk home after the event while Blake and I did our thang. At the point we singed up our numbers were 25,350 and up so there were a lot of people out. There were a lot of people with dogs and strollers out. There were so many people that Blake and I could barely walk. Because of this (and the early hour) we stopped at a java hut to grab lattes. We continued on with our "race" with our lattes in hand and decided that the 5k was just too crowded so we opted for the 10k. There were houses at the end of the race with bands playing out front, kegs, and mimosas. The mimosas were quite tempting but we kept moving, for the hungry of course.
Race Ready!
After we got back from the race, which we nearly won but for our latte stop, the boys came over for some football. Yeah! Football woohoo!!! It was me, John John, Christopher, Blake and Bruce. It turned into more of a game of catch than actual touch football. The boys were reminded of my stellar throwing skills and my even stellarer catching skills. I did a lot of running back and forth and ran into several neighbors. For those of you who know her Mary Loewen is married! The Taylors are selling their house! Phil Cousins lives in the Johansens place! Cameron Skreden is 15 and oh so cute! For those of you that don't know any of those people just ignore.
Thanksgiving dinner was at the Pomers. The Lyman 4 like to head over to Napa for Thanksgiving dinner if we're not invited over to the Pomers. We as a family don't exactly like turkey. Well Mom might but the other 3 don't really like turkey. We enjoy driving into Napa and each getting our own food in a nice restaurant. Mom likes that we are stuck in a car together for a few hours so she can ask all her questions and there's no chance of escape. For the Thanksgiving dinner we agreed to bring over 2 veggies, wine, and some dessert. Mom, Dad and Blake made 3 delicious veggies: a brussel sprout dish, a butternut squash treat, and green beans. All 3 were excellent and the rest of my family were smart enough to keep me out of the process. I had the task of transporting the 2 Ettores pies and the 2 bottles of wine. I also had strict instructions to be "helpful" at dinner. I did help with some of the cooking. I poured the potatoes into the strainer, I poured water into the water glasses, I carried things to the table, I juiced some lemons, and tried to be as helpful as I could. Dinner was excellent. Before dessert Lisa and I made everyone get up and take a long walk. They weren't exactly pleased at this because it was cold out but the cold numbed the complaining by mile 3. Just kidding we walked around a mile. Dad went and got these reflective vests we gave Mom last year. they include flashing bulbs on the front and back. They are really quite stylish in a crossing guard sort of way.
For dessert we had 4 options and I played waitress to the whole crew. I got everyone's order right except Christopher. Christopher wanted one of each EXCEPT pumpkin. There was pumpkin on his plate and he refused to accept it. I'm not kidding. Little brat wouldn't take it. Maybe Christopher needs a title like Sir Blakeslee. Hmmmmm.
Once home I got in touch with my highschool friends and headed over to see them. The tree main boys who I was friends with (Dave, Steve and Brett) are either married or engaged and they're getting OLD! and they're balding! but I miss them in spite of these shortcomings so I headed over to see them, their fabulous wives (who are much more fabulous than their husbands deserve) and their fabulous families. They were playing Balderdash and it was heartwarming how they still behave like 16 year olds. All the jokes were overtly sexual which is exactly as it was. The biggest difference was that all their teeth were purple from wine vs. the old days when it was cheap vodka and cheap beer. I made it home around 1AM and was so very very tired I could barely stand it.
And that was my Thanksgiving.
